The heart of the heat pump beats in Nürnberg

The unique history of the Chillventa exhibition has released new forces beyond refrigeration and air conditioning technology, initiated unusual processes and established productive partnerships. Chillventa was the nucleus for all these developments, but also for the thematic and physical transfer of a very special event spirit. The European Heat Pump Summit 2009 – powered by Chillventa, which takes place for the first time on 9–10 September, was created from this. “NürnbergMesse has decided to assign high priority to heat pumps in the form of events and to put money, manpower and passion into these. This also goes well with our company’s marked technological reputation,” says Walter Hufnagel, Member of the Management Board of NürnbergMesse. With more than 250 conference participants from all over Europe and 22 exhibitors at the accompanying lobby show, the European Heat Pump Summit in Nürnberg is also getting off to a remarkable start.

Renewable energy is in good hands at NürnbergMesse and the Nürnberg exhibition venue – as shown by the biogas and heat pump events. Then there is the great overall importance of energy efficiency at various exhibitions such as Brau Beviale, POWTECH, European and American Coatings Show for process technologies, and Chillventa, IFH/Intherm or ELTEC for building services, to name just a few examples.
And now the first European Heat Pump Summit in 2009. The European heat pump experts and everyone interested in renewable energy have excellent opportunities to gather information and exchange views at a high level in Nürnberg – and this compressed into two days.

The European Heat Pump Summit with its professional and European orientation promises to become a special highlight. This distinguishes it from the many consumer-orientated, regional heat pump events all over the country, which are primarily geared to heat pumps in one- and two-family houses. Nürnberg, however, covers the whole range of power classes for heat pump applications: industry, commerce, apartment blocks, etc.

A look into the future
“The definitely European-wide orientation of our heat pump activities will also lead to us incorporating heat pumps in the new Chillventa Rossija exhibition, which takes place in Moscow for the first time in spring 2011,” says Hufnagel looking into the future.

Topics in focus in 2009
The summit focuses on the following segments: renewable energy, heat pump potential, components and product development, heat pump applications, innovative systems and a look ahead to future applications. The summit participants can look forward to interesting and topical presentations such as “Highly efficient heat pumps for industrial and commercial applications”, “Gas absorption heat pumps in existing buildings”, “Energy-efficient fans in heat pumps”, “New refrigerants for heat pumps” or “Development of a new system for heat recovery from sewage for heat pump operation”.

Heat pump = environmental protection
In conjunction with refrigeration, air conditioning and heating systems, the heat pump can make an extensive contribution to slowing down global warming.
The common thermodynamic cycle, which is used in refrigerators, bakeries, slaughterhouses, industrial manufacturing processes, air conditioning or heating of buildings, and many other applications, offers immense potential savings in CO2 emissions that contribute to the greenhouse effect.

If used sensibly, the waste heat from refrigeration and air conditioning systems alone could cover 30 to 40 per cent of energy requirements for CO2-free heating of our buildings in Germany.
The heat pump as a “heat machine” that offers the required heat and cold at exactly the right temperature level is basically far superior to the boiler, which produces heat by burning fossil fuel at unnecessarily high temperatures. Dr. Rainer Jakobs, Heat Pump and Refrigeration Information Centre (Informationszentrum Wärmepumpen + Kältetechnik IZW) and coordinator of the European Heat Pump Summit, points the way to the future: “Heating by burning is as old as mankind itself, but will probably only be regarded as a relic of the past in a few years’ time. Fossil fuels are too valuable to be burned just to heat the room temperature to as little as 20°C.”

Associations meet in Nürnberg at the same time
The European Heat Pump Association ehpa, the German Heat Pump Association (Bundesverband Wärmepumpe bwp) and the Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Federation (Zentralverband Kälte Klima Wärmepumpe ZVKKW) are holding their conferences and board meetings in the run-up to the European Heat Pump Summit.

Facts
The EU’s recognition of the heat pump as a technology for using geothermal, hydrothermal and aerothermal renewable energy was the European political confirmation of the commitment to heat pumps at NürnbergMesse. The broad support and good response on the part of many organizations and companies from the sector have also confirmed this commitment in 2009.

Background
NürnbergMesse is organizing the new dialogue forum – the European Heat Pump Summit – in close cooperation with the sponsors IEA-HPP, ehpa, EPEE, BIV, the German Ministry of Economics and Technology, bwp, DKV, IZW and the PTJ Forschungszentrum Jülich. “The focus is on the possibilities and limitations of heat pump technology in buildings and in commercial and industrial applications,” emphasizes Gabriele Hannwacker, Exhibition Director at NürnbergMesse.

The target groups are energy consultants, energy utilities, decision-makers from politics and federal, state and local authorities, planners, plant assemblers, heat pump manufacturers (engineering – sales – marketing), operators of municipal and commercial properties (housing development companies) and operators of industrial properties. The lectures are presented in German or English with simultaneous translation.
