Energy Efficiency, Safety and Sustainability of Heat Pump Applications with low GWP HFO Refrigerants 
Achieving climate targets while fulfilling regulatory requirements like those foreseen by F-Gas are the challenges we all are facing right now, and we will be dealing with in the years to come. Heat Pumps play a decisive role in CO2 emissions reduction, substituting fossil fuel boilers and heating systems, hence contributing to the Continental Decarbonization Objectives. Low GWP refrigerants need to be implemented in new heat pump developments in order to fulfill F-Gas requirements in the first step. Moreover, A2L refrigerants with low GWP can enable achieving higher system energy efficiency and they allow for higher sink temperatures than HFC refrigerants. This makes heat pumps fit for use in buildings renovations and for operation also with existing hydronic radiator systems at a high energy efficiency rate, despite operating at higher flow temperatures. This presentation explains the product properties and related effects on their application in heat pump systems. It also covers the advantages of A2L versus A3 refrigerants in terms of handling and safety from a regulatory background perspective. The safety requirements of A2L refrigerants are also compared to those classified as A1... and the presentation will show how in many cases standard components can be used with A2L refrigerants, leading to lower product cost and to higher potential economies. There will be references to theoretical calculations, drop-in comparison tests and results from real applications, covering sustainable solutions for heat pumps in residential and commercial applications.
