Importance of Acoustic Simulation to Evaluate the Impact of Design Modifications of Scroll Compressor 
Heat pump is one of the main technologies that will allow reaching the complete decarbonization of the heating sector. The adoption of these systems is growing at a high pace and this technology becomes more and more common. While this is extremely important for the industry, the widespread adoption of these heating systems is requiring more attention to features like sound emission. The reduction of heat pump noise is becoming of critical importance for the adoption of this heating technology. It can be said that sound is now at the same level or even higher importance as efficiency. Heat pumps installed in residential or urban areas must comply with regulations that are becoming more stringent. Heat pump manufactures invest a significant amount of development time to reduce the system sound emission. One of the main sound sources of such units is the compressor which delivers the refrigerant flow necessary for its operation. Due to restricting regulations and the introduction of variable speed compressors, it becomes more challenging to meet targets required by customers. Acoustic simulations are essential to reduce the development time and to get more insight into the product. The presentation shows how Emerson is using acoustic simulations to support the industry to reduce the sound level and the sound quality of scroll compressors. It aims to evaluate the effect of design modifications to the sound emission of the full system. Finally, Emerson is also helping the industry to reduce the overall applied cost of the units.
