Heat Pump Systems with Low GWP Refrigerants [6] Vortragssprache Englisch

Global air conditioning market will expand by 3.5 times in next 30 years due to warming climates and growing economy of developing countries. This development means more emissions of CO2 through power plants and high-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. In order to minimize environmental burden from air-conditioning systems, we need to improve energy efficiency and reduce the GWP of refrigerants. Searching for more environmentally-friendly refrigerants started from 1970’s by developing new fluids and utilizing more natural refrigerants safely and economically. Researchers searched exhaustively for better combination of molecules and the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) cooperatively evaluated the performance of new fluids. These efforts helped identify the lower GWP refrigerants than the high-GWP HFC refrigerants. Since natural refrigerants and newly-identified synthetic refrigerants have different thermodynamic and heat transfer characteristics from currently used refrigerants, transitioning to lower-GWP refrigerants requires a whole-system approach. For these needs, a new annex called “Annex 54: Heat Pump Systems with Low GWP Refrigerants” was proposed in 2018 under the Internal Energy Agency’s Heat Pumping Technology (IEA-HPT). This annex aims at promoting low-GWP refrigerant application to accelerate phase down of high-GWP HFCs by developing design guidelines of optimized heat pump components and system for low-GWP refrigerants. Main tasks are: literature review of start-of-the-art technologies; optimization of heat pump components and system for low-GWP refrigerants; analysis of the LCCP impact by the current design and optimized design with low-GWP refrigerants; and market opportunity study for heat pumps with low-GWP refrigerants and low-GWP refrigerants availability for 2030. Annex 54 participants are Italy, Japan, South Korea, Sweden and the U.S. Annex 54 started in January 2019 by holding the kick off meeting in Atlanta, GA, U.S.
