Very High Temperature Heat Pump (120°C) Installed at Ghent, Belgium, Heating District Network [25] Vortragssprache Englisch

EDF Luminus owns and operates the Ghent District Heating Network. The city of Ghent and EDF Luminus are committed to a reduction of CO2 emissions. The heat source for the district heating network (CHP engines) is centrally based in the city center. A Memorandum of Understanding between EDF Luminus and the city of Gent specifies the ambition to switch energy sources to more renewable type sources in the next three years. Because of the location in the city center, applicable technologies are limited. A large heat pump is the best option available today. The installed R&D heat pump to cool the Low temperature of the CHP engine will help EDF Luminus to proof the technology and it will support the lobby to valorize a large heat pump. In collaboration with the company Johnson Controls, EDF Research and Development has developed a very high temperature heat pump based on a twin screws compressors and R245fa fluid. An important work was carried out to characterize its performances that will be presented. This heat pump can yield up to 120°C heat at the condenser side and the evaporator can valorize heat from 60°C. The COP and capacity at different evaporator/condenser temperatures is presented. The expected benefit for EDF Luminus is a +2.6% efficiency increase of the system. It lifts the total net efficiency of the CHP-HP system to +93%. The yield up to 120°C is key for the EDF Luminus district heating network as it is a HT network. We consider that such a very high temperature heat pump coupled to a heating district network is a world record. A very large number of district heating networks operate at high temperature (100°C and above). With the generalization of very high temperature heat pumps, such coupling could then be largely deployed.
