Integration of high-temperature industrial Heat Pumps [31] Vortragssprache Englisch

The need and interest in Heat Pumps for process heat generation to decarbonize the industrial environment increased significantly in recent years. In addition to rising costs, the high geopolitical dependence on countries that supply fossil fuels also poses an economic risk. Using renewable electricity and high-temperature Heat Pumps (HTHP) can mitigate these risks and associated challenges.

HTHP technology is not yet widely used in the industrial field, although intensive research has been conducted. One reason is still lack of information, illustration of integration challenges, and successful demonstration plants. Therefore, a comprehensive process analysis, accompanied by the well-known and already-established pinch analysis, is a prerequisite. In addition, other factors such as available space, existing infrastructure, and economic feasibility are also important for successful integration.

The possible integration of Heat Pumps to provide process heat in the industrial sectors is illustrated by two case studies. Both case studies show that a detailed process analysis is required for successful Heat Pump integration. A one-to-one replacement of the previous conventional fossil-based heat generators, especially for steam processing, is often neither practical nor necessary with a Heat Pump. A re-evaluation is mandatory when integrating a new heat generator, such as a Heat Pump. First, unlike a fossil burner, a suitable heat source is needed, and second, existing processes can often be run at a much lower temperature level with minor modifications.

This presentation provides insights and examples of HTHP integration analysis, possible market and available suppliers. Guidelines for future projects and identification of promising processes are derived. Furthermore, examples from recent years and lessons learned are given to promote the integration of HTHPs.
