Spotlight on innovations, market developments, and applications

Two days packed with high-calibre professional expertise – that’s what participants in the European Heat Pump Summit can look forward to in Nuremberg on 28 and 29 October. The compact, two-day congress programme offers presentations by experts on current developments in heat pump technologies, market developments, and applications, providing important impetus for the heating revolution in Europe and beyond. The congress programme is complemented by the accompanying Foyer Expo, where companies present their latest products, solutions and developments. The Expo is already fully booked – a clear indication of the significant interest in and relevance of the event.
“The European Heat Pump Summit thrives on the intensive professional dialogue between peers. International experts come together to discuss current developments, share knowledge, and gain practical insights into heat pump technology. The programme has been finalized, and it promises two days packed with interesting topics, high-calibre presentations, and valuable inspiration for the sector,” says Daniela Heinkel, Director of the European Heat Pump Summit and the Chillventa trade fair at NürnbergMesse.
Focus on market developments and policy frameworks
Among other things, the first day of the congress is dedicated to market and energy policy developments, such as those in Germany and the Netherlands. Dr. Björn Schreinermacher from the German Heat Pump Association (BWP) will analyse the current situation in and prospects for the German heat pump market. Additionally, Andries van Wijhe from TNO (Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research) will explore the opportunities and challenges in the market in the Netherlands, a country that is currently undergoing a radical transformation process. Saverio Papa and Leopoldo Micò from the European Heat Pump Association will discuss the EU legal framework for climate and energy and explain the latest political developments in conjunction with the Clean Industrial Deal and its significance.
Research and development: novel approaches with hydrocarbons as refrigerants
A major focus is on research into Class A3 refrigerants. Massimiliano Manfro from Aermec provides additional insights with an overview of safety standards and the thermodynamic properties of R-290. These presentations show that the future belongs to low GWP refrigerants – provided that safety and efficiency go hand in hand.
Component development: quieter, more efficient, more powerful
Another key topic is product and component development. Simon Waldner from Getzner Werkstoffe shows how the acoustics of heat pumps can be improved through targeted vibration isolation – a crucial factor for the acceptance of heat pumps in residential settings. Lateb Ramdane from SKF presents magnetically levitated high-speed motors that are setting new benchmarks for efficiency and minimal maintenance. With his modelling strategy for compressors with vapor injection, Marek Lehocky from Gamma Technologies is making an important contribution to component optimisation.
Applications: from existing building stock to industry
Among other things, the second day of the congress will focus on applications for existing building stock, neighbourhoods, and industry. Carsten Wemhöner from the Rapperswil campus of OST (Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences) will present an innovative concept for the integration of multiple heat sources for heating system upgrades. Ivo Eiermann from Johnson Controls will discuss how large heat pumps with outputs of up to 60 MW can be integrated into district heating networks – a key to the decarbonisation of urban infrastructures.
High-temperature and mega heat pumps: new standards in the industry
A particular highlight is the presentation by Tobias Hirsch from Everllence on the world’s largest CO₂ heat pump in Esbjerg, Denmark. The mega heat pump supplies climate-neutral district heating and is an impressive demonstration of the potential of large-scale solutions. In addition, Josef Grassauer from GIG Karasek presents the CompriVAP system – a modular solution to recover industrial waste heat and produce vapor up to 215°C.
